Featured Customizer (2 of 3) for October 2008

the unknown has a really good knack for picking parts you wouldn't normally think of using and making them work for whatever character he is working on. His paint is always clean and smooth. If you've never taken the time to look at some of his customs you've been missing out. As an added bonus for the Custom Celebration he is including a first look at his self custom.

Which style of figures do you enjoy customizing the most?

New sculpt. Their cheap and easy to find! I also like that they are somewhat correct in body proportion making it more conventional for removable accessories like Helmets and weaponry. The softer plastic they are made of is to the customizers advantage as well. A lot of modifications can be made using a simple exacto knife.

What brand of paint do you use?

I'm not picky on paint at all; just as long as it's 'flossy glossy'. I buy what I find locally which is Model Masters acryl. It's application is smooth, and although not completely 'chip proof', it is durable enough to handle moderate play.

Where do you find inspiration for your customs?

My childhood........ARAH 4ever! All of my custom designs are largely based on the ARAH figures I had when I was a kid. Unfortunately, I parted ways with my childhood passions in my early adolescence and didn't rediscover them until I became a parent. So, I started surfing the web to find 'past memories' to share with my sons. That's when I discovered Hasbro brought the line back. Skimming through the new character concepts, I remember the disappointing thought, "These are not the characters I remember!". So I started digging up all the current news and info on G.I. Joe. You can't imagine my surprise when I ran across this site!! To the customizing community in general......Thanks for ALL the inspiration!!!!

What do you consider to be your best tools of the trade?

My dremel and exacto. Working with 'new sculpt' pieces, if you don't have the combination of these tools, then you ain't working. The pieces won't allow you to!!

What is your strongest area when it comes to customizing?

I have to say my modifications. There is no such thing as 'universal' when working with new sculpt pieces, and yet I can manage to make some of the crazy combinations of parts compatible with each other. Tight and flawless.

My sanding is rather impressive too. Just look at my Self Custom for example......That's a VvV Ghost Bear torso!
