2DARK2C Featured Customizer
We know a rising star when we see one. February 2015's Featured Customizer brings a fresh set of eyes to the table. From the jump, 2DARK2C's been thinking outside of the box. Then he took that box and cut it up to make a pair of wings with it. His work isn't super clean, but you can see where he's going with it. Each project he tackles shows even more creativity and improvement then his last. We expect big things from him this year. Keep an eye on his customs in the Gallery archives and the Critique's Section of the forum. We promise, you will be impressed.
What do you enjoy customizing the most?
I enjoy the accidental customs the most, when inspiration hits, while watching a movie or digging through the fodder box. I think bringing unlikely characters into my joe verse and honoring my childhood heroes, is a theme I will continue.
What brand of paint do you prefer?
I have only used the cheaper craft paint on figures, apple barrel and folk art mainly. Honestly, we have a ton of it around and my skill hasn't progressed enough to justify any more quality paint. I have used some cheap spray paint on vehicles.
Where do you find inspiration for your customs?
Wow, anything that I am currently or have previously identified with or just found interesting. For the most part, iconic movies, music, and my own twisted since of humor! The members here and the custom gallery are also a huge source of inspiration for me. I have zero comic book background and even my "joe" knowledge was/is limited.
What do you consider to be your best tools of the trade?
Honestly, google image search is my #1 tool when I am in the process of customizing an existing figure. I use my off brand dremel and milliput on just about everything.
What is your strongest area when it comes to customizing?
I think photo composition and lighting. I usually take 50+ pics for every one I post and have spent several hours on getting the perfect "in my minds eye" shot.
Thanks and then some
Firstly, I would like to say that, I am humbled and a little in awe about this. Thank you, JoeCustoms members, friends, and fans!
It was such a short time ago that I was totally oblivious to the fact that people customized action figures. My journey started by me "having" to have a gi joe for my avatar, on another site. I bought an Outback v1 on ebay for cheap and that was that.
I got interested in the idea of casting a sterling silver Destro head, so I had to find a good deal on one of those to make a mold. While patiently waiting on that project to happen, I googled custom Destro and have never looked back!
I found dozens of toy custom sites, but I picked JoeCustoms as home, and it has been a good one. So many members have helped me out and showed me the way of the customizer . From day one, I have seen our hobby as art, and it truly is. Some of the customs I have seen posted here are high art and they should be celebrated as such.
My first custom, DESTRO'S BODY, was such a rush and I loved everything about the process. I feel so lucky to have found this site, and so grateful for the friends I have made.
I have a long and varied work history, but I draw a lot of confidence from my current profession. For the last 10 years I've been a trained bench monkey,er... I mean bench jeweler, working with the same basic skill set as grinding on silver and gold, grinding on plastic and epoxy is almost a natural act.
