1990 introduced two new Sub Teams to the G.I. Joe mythos, Sky Patrol and the Sonic Fighters.

Standard Cardbacks

The standard carbacks in 1990 changed very little from the 1989 for runner. The same basic branding and design style continued through 1990.

  • Each cardback featured a 34 figure checklist on the back.
  • Carbacks included the 1986 style "Digital Blast" Effect.
  • Features the new G.I. Joe logo used from 1990 to 1994.
  • The Standard 1990 Front uses the Photoshop "White Layer Trick".
  • The Standard Front Cardback file is in 230 dpi instead of the standard 300 dpi to reduce the file size.

Combat Pay Promotion

Combat Pay was a promotion where redemable cupons were included with figures that could be used for prize drawings.

  • Combat pay was avalible in 1990 and 1991, but the promotional stickes for 1991 were different from 1990
  • Combat pay came in donominations of $5 to $10,000.
  • The hand applied promotional stick was placed in the middle of the far left side of the cardback.
  • To make a Combat Pay cardback, turn on the Combat Pay Promotion layer in the 1990 Standard (front) .psd file.

Command Ring Promotion

The Command Ring promotion pair each figure with one wareable ring representing a division of G.I. Joe or Destro's Iron Gernadeires.

  • Each figure also included an isert listing the rings and a mail away promotion for G.I. Joe Sunglasses
  • There were 8 Command Rings including:
    • G.I. Joe:
      • Airborne
      • Arctic force
      • Artillery
      • Infantry
      • S.E.A.L.
      • Shuttle Crew
      • Tank Corps
    • Destro's Iron Grenadiers
      • T.A.R.G.A.T.
  • The hand applied promotional stick was placed in the middle of the far left side of the cardback.
  • To make a Combat Pay cardback, turn on the Combat Pay Promotion layer in the 1990 Standard (front) .psd file.


1989 Figures in 1990

Like in previous years, meany older figures were still avalible in 1990. None of these figures were avalible with the special promotions for 1990. To make one of these cardbacks, use the 1989 Standard cardback (front) and the 1990 Standard cardback (back) templates.

Sky Patrol

Sky Partol was an all new subteam for 1990 featuring repainted G.I. Joe figures with new heads. This team was a specialty paratrooper unit with chrome "laser proof" vehicles. Each figure included a working foil parachute and pack.

  • Sky Patrol cardbacks were the larger "Deluxe" size and configuration.

Sonic Fighters

The Sonic Fighters were an all new subteam for 1990 featuring repainted G.I. Joe and Cobra figures. Each figure included a large "Sonic Sounds" back pack that played 4 digital sounds. Each figure also included a large number of accessories.

  • Sonic Fighter cardbacks were the larger "Deluxe" size and configuration.
  • They featured a special sound themed Blast and a green gradiant.

Rapid-Fire figure with Video Cassett

Rapid-Fire came packaged with a video cassett titled Revenge of the Pharahos. He was the only figure offered in this format as part of the Real American Hero line.

This cardback is not currently avalible becuse of the size. It may be avalible in the future sometime.
