Head Sculpting

Hello dudes and girls, As many of you may wonder when looking at a Loop original headsculpt, "How does he do it?" Well, here's a pictorial of a current work-in-progress.

What you need are some Sculpey, a dentist/sculpting pick, reference pictures, and your fingernails. File:Lscu01

Take a small portion of sculpey, only enough for you to sculpt the face, from the forehead to the chin, cheek to cheek. File:Lscu02

I won't get into details of how to form facial muscles with a pick/fingernail, but observe the angle of the pick/fingernails as it forms each facial feature. I always start with the browline down to the nose.

Use your fingernail to form the cheeks. File:Lscu08

Here comes the mouth. Looking at the angle of the pick to the sculpey and the blunt edge, I’m intending to make his mouth with open-lips. File:Lscu09 File:Lscu10

After plotting a facial part such as eyes or mouths, lightly smoothen any bumps that were formed from indents to make the muscles surrounding that facial part look natural. File:Lscu11 File:Lscu12

Use your fingernail to define the profile of the lower jaw. File:Lscu13 File:Lscu14

Once you know everything looks good (face-wise: from forehead to chin, cheek to cheek), you bake/boil it as a checkpoint.


Continuing from the harden face, the next step is to add the rest of the head and neck/ball point. Most of the work here requires you to smooth the added sculpey with your own finger tips. File:Lscu17 File:Lscu18 File:Lscu19 File:Lscu20

Using the edge of the pick, form the jawline. File:Lscu21 File:Lscu22 File:Lscu24

If the person you are trying to sculpt has short hair, it's best to start sculpting the sides and back of the head. File:Lscu25 File:Lscu26

Bake/Boil what you have as a checkpoint. Now work on the top part of his hair, and ears. File:Lscu27 File:Lscu28 File:Lscu29 File:Lscu30

Bake/Boil checkpoint for the final time. Afterwards, glaze the section between the neck and head to harden that joint and to prevent the head from cracking off its neck. It really works and allows playability. File:Lscu31

Last step is to glaze it with gloss medium. Apply thick layers of gloss to give smooth skin over any indents from “pick-work”. File:Lscu34

TA-DAH! That is how you sculpt and paint your own head.
